Story behind Safe Place

Becoming a mum is a joyous milestone. Unfortunately, not all women are able to view their pregnancy as a positive event. Financial worries, broken relationships and health issues can cause the news of a pregnancy to be an immense burden.

When Jennifer Heng, Director of Safe Place, became pregnant as a teenager, she experienced the fear, loneliness and desperation of having what was called a “crisis pregnancy”. She walked in the painful consequences of her choices for many years, and only found hope and healing much later in her life through her faith, family and loved ones.

“What help can I give to other women who may be in similar situations as I was?” she wondered. With a passion and desire to empower others, she began to develop plans to set up a place where expectant mothers who feel alone and unsupported can find real help through people who really care.

In early 2018, Safe Place was birthed in partnership with Lakeside Family Services.
